Affordable Care Act is Impacting Hospital Supply Chains

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is transforming hospital supply chains and bringing a focus on discipline and organization, according to a recent Forbes article.

Thanks to the ACA, large hospital systems are looking for savings in new areas, including their supply chains. And if a network has more than four hospitals, savings in procurement are a major opportunity.

Historically, hospital networks ordered from large medical supply distributors like Cardinal Health or Owens & Minor. These larger networks are now building their own automated warehouses, hiring workers and ordering direct from the manufacturers to cut supply chain costs.

According to the article, the hospital supply chain is still about 10 years behind industry, but its quickly catching up.  Consequently, the hospital industry offers opportunities for equipment and system suppliers as well as to young professionals looking for a career in the supply chain.
