Explore Chicago – McCormick Place Style – at ProMat 2017

By Alex Batty, MHI Marketing Communications Coordinator |@mhi_alex

ProMat 2017, located at Chicago’s McCormick Place, is t-minus one month away, and I’ve never been. So I did what any good child of the Internet does and Googled it. And Google Mapped it. And whoa.

For those of you who have been to McCormick place, excuse the child-like wonder. I grew up in a small town. But I did do quite a bit of intensive research (I went to the second page of the Google search results) and there might be stuff in here that you haven’t experience yet and may want to check out.

For other newbies like me: buckle up, buttercup.

McCormick Place is the largest convention center in North America and is made up of four buildings spread across 2.6 million+ square feet. To give you some perspective, the circled area in the screengrab below is one city block. It be big, baby.

And what is that blue space on the map, you ask? McCormick Place sits literally on the edge of Lake Michigan, which has the longest shoreline of the United States at roughly 3,288 miles. And on all the lists of “must-do cool stuff in America” that I googled, dipping your toe in the Great Lakes was on there, so you can check that off the bucket list.

The Chicago Skyline is pretty amazing and there is too much to talk about here, but there is a handy dandy skyline guide at http://wikitravel.org/en/Chicago_skyline_guide.

If you have extra time, just up the road is Shedd Aquarium, The Field Museum, Adler Planetarium, and Soldier Field, all conveniently located in the beautiful lakefront Museum Campus.

Just a little farther up the road is the famous Art Institute of Chicago. I’m not even an art person (seriously, I went to the National Gallery in London and the Musee D’Orsay and spent more time looking at the buildings than the art), but even I’d make a stop here. They have some pretty cool installations. They’ve even got archival materials about McCormick Place housed there.

Next week we’ve got a post coming up about where to go and what to do in Chicago, but for now you can get your feet wet with the area surrounding McCormick Place.
