“Jobs of Tomorrow”: Adjusting to the New Normal

Better. Faster. Cheaper. When it comes to purchasing products online, these are the new expectations of customers. In episode 11 of our “Jobs of Tomorrow” docuseries, we take a look at how the supply chain has adjusted to the new normal.

Even though consumers’ expectations that the global supply chain will respond instantly to their desires seem a bit unrealistic, there is no turning back. Dr. Randy Bradley, a supply chain management expert at the University of Tennessee, acknowledges that many companies lost sight of the fact that they were part of a global supply chain subject to massive disruptions. It took the pandemic to push them to address the inefficiencies in their supply chain.

One way that firms are ramping up their output is through automation. In this episode, Jeff Gavenas, SVP, Sales & Marketing, Fives Intralogistics, said that his company is striving to automate undesirable jobs. The use of robots in the workforce can reduce human error, human injury, and allow workers to focus on the tasks they prefer. (We explore other ways that firms are combating labor issues in episode 10 of “Jobs of Tomorrow”).

As this episode shows, the “new normal” applies to both supply chains and workers. Gavenas has a few tips for people about to enter the workforce: “Expect your job to change over your life. Expect multiple careers.” To hear more of his advice, watch the full episode on MHIview. The full “Jobs of Tomorrow” series can also be streamed on Amazon.
