Material Handling… for Rocket Launch Pads!

By Alex Batty, MHI Marketing Communications Coordinator | @mhi_alex

I get news alerts from BBC Science Focus Magazine (…shocker) and while the alerts most often pose questions like a 5-year-old asking why to everything, my inner child also wants to know why.

So it works out nicely.

But I got an alert the other day about massive machines for moving big stuff.

You know me. I was like “MATERIAL HANDLING?!?!?”

And yes folks, I can tie this into material handling. This falls directly into the “movement” part of material handling and also ties into protection. Because, as you know if you’ve taken our fundamentals of warehousing and distribution course, “protection of materials as they are moved and stored is a vital part of warehousing.” And also outside of warehousing. Because material handling as a part of supply chain extends outside the four walls, which is why MODEX has a whole solutions center devoted to transportation and logistics.

But I digress. Back to the GIANT MATERIAL HANDLING.

You can read the full article here, but when you’re moving large stuff, it’s important to have the right equipment. Of course, I loved the NASA one (if you missed my material handling in space post, it’s a cool one), but the one that really caught my eye is the one at the end where they’re moving wind turbines. Y’know, these:

The company that builds the transport actually used modular units that can be combined to fit many needs. Which sounds a lot like what a lot of our exhibitors and members are doing, so go us!

When you need to move stuff and keep it protected, we’ve got the solutions for you. Whether it’s massive, like this stuff, or teeny-tiny, I’m pretty sure material handling has a solution.

That’s why I like working in this industry so much. We problem-solvers. Even if the problem is moving an entire building.
