President Obama Announces Two New Public-Private Manufacturing Innovation Institutes

This week President Barack Obama announced the creation of two Pentagon-led institutes that will combine public and private resources to foster manufacturing innovation.

One center will be in Chicago; the other will be outside Detroit. The Canton, Mich., institute will focus on light metal manufacturing. The one in Chicago will concentrate on high-tech digital manufacturing and design.

“Keeping America at the cutting edge of technology and innovation is what is going to ensure a steady stream of good jobs into the 21st century,” said President Obama. “And that’s why we’re here today — to take new action to put America at the forefront of 21st century manufacturing.”

The institutes bring together companies, federal agencies and universities to work on technologies that can boost manufacturing.
