By Gary Forger, MHI Managing Director of Professional Development

Building the future doesn’t always come naturally to people. Too often, we are harshly confronted or otherwise assaulted by a changing present before it registers that our future will be different. And we need to do something about it now.

Material handling and logistics are not exempt from this. Fortunately, some of the early detection work of what the future holds for us has already been done.

In this column last time, the focus was on the 10 disruptors that are presently altering the supply chain. From the U.S. Roadmap for Material Handling and Logistics, those 10 are:

–E-commerce
–Relentless competition
–Mass personalization
–Urbanization
–Mobile and wearable computing
–Robotics and automation
–Sensors and the Internet of Things
–Big data and predictive analytics
–Sustainability
–The changing workforce.
