The Importance of Networking

I dislike networking. Most of the time I find it awkward and forced. However, as I have gotten older I have realized how incredibly important networking is if you are looking to move forward in your career. Networking allows people to get to know you, what you do and create a (hopefully) good and memorable impression of you. You are much more likely to be promoted – or find the job you are looking for – if people find you engaging and see your work as valuable. But, how will they know if you don’t tell them?

I am not an inherently shy person – but I do sometimes shrink away from “networking” opportunities because they make me feel so awkward. I have gotten better over the years and because I do know it is so important – I continue to practice. This article on How to Network: 12 Tips for Shy People from CIO.com had some really good ideas. Even if you aren’t “shy” but feel that networking isn’t natural for you, this article can help.
