Training Students for Warehousing Jobs Supports Local Economy

Think about the last item you purchased online. Chances are that item has been through a distribution center where humans are working along side robots to satisfy an increasing demand for fast delivery. More jobs are needed to fill the roles in warehouses at Amazon and other companies. In fact, the number of distribution center jobs in California has increased by 48% in the past three years. High schools and community colleges are using technology to train students for these jobs.

Two hours East of San Francisco, Patterson High School has become a supply chain and logistics hub and training center in Patterson California. The training center is supported by MHI’s Career and Technical Education Program (CTE). This program provides instructional support to educational institutions seeking to provide training for entry level students in the area of warehousing and distribution, supply chain and logistics.

Philip Alfano, Superintendent at Patterson School District says, “It’s the perfect training program for the local economy. Students have access to the jobs that are there now.” According to the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, material handling and logistics is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in America.

The industry is in need of young workers to fill jobs in material handling and close the skills gap. This episode of MHI View outlines solutions companies can implement today to create a better future.
