Working in a 24/7 World

Living and working a world where people can email or call you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week can be absolutely exhausting. You feel like you never actually leave work at work. I remember when I first got out of college my favorite thing about working was that when you left for the day, there was no studying, no homework,  work was over and it was time to tune out. This was the early 2000’s and not everyone had cell phones and Blackberrys were just becoming a “thing.” Well, no longer! Almost everyone has a smartphone – even the most technologically backwards coworkers can check email at home, on the road, on vacation – whenever, wherever.

This NY Times article talks about the pitfalls of being “on call” 24/7 and how many companies are steering their employees towards tuning out after work to avoid burnout.

How do you handle being available to your work around the clock? Any tips or ideas to handle the pressure of answering people at all hours?
