Job searching can be daunting especially for recent graduates facing an increasingly competitive workforce. How can your resume stand out in a sea of applicants? Here are some tips to help you get noticed.

Tailor Your Resume

Employers often receive hundreds of resume submissions over the course of weeks. To help filter your resume to the top, take the guess work out for employers by using language that clearly matches keywords in the job description. Read the job description to the position you wish to apply for and pin point words and phrases that describe the job function and industry. Use these keywords in your resume when describing your experience and qualifications to please recruiters.

Know Your Weaknesses

Once you are familiar with your target job function and industry, look for holes in your qualifications and work experience and set a plan to strengthen those areas. Internships, relevant classes and freelance projects are great ways to indicate on your resume that you have developed a skill, acquired knowledge or gained experience in a specific area.

Sell Yourself

Limiting the description of job tasks and maximizing description of accomplishments on your resume will show the employer what you can do for them. Prove your competency by including what skills you have and elaborating on how you have put them to use in past work experience.

Be Professional

A professional appearance will go a long way. Below are a few ways to ensure this presence.

  • Use 10-12 point type size
  • Include white space to ensure breathing room between paragraphs or sections
  • Make sure name and contact information are easy to find (Location recommended at top of page). Provide a professional email address as opposed to partygirl247@gmail.com and set a voicemail that speaks to your caller as properly as you would in an interview.

These tips are sure to boost your resume and help you land the position you desire. For those interested in supply chain careers visit www.mhi.org/careers for more information on the supply chain, occupations and salaries and how to prepare for a career in the supply chain.
