Leadership in Young Professionals

Can young professionals take a leadership role among more experienced co-workers? Absolutely! Leadership does not necessarily mean taking over. If you are a young professional, become an active part of a team and emerge as a natural leader. Here are a few ways to make sure you are taking steps to show competency, value and respect in the workplace.

Conquer the simple tasks

When you are the young, new employee, your co-workers may already doubt your ability to be mature and responsible. A simple way to prove your competency is to learn office protocol and do what is asked. No matter how boring the task, make sure you do not need to be reminded. If your employers can count on you to handle small everyday minutia, than they are more likely to trust you with greater responsibilities. If you have suggestions for more efficient protocols and procedures, your co-workers are more likely to listen knowing you have tried and understand their system first.

Keep learning

Part of being a young professional is constant learning. Make sure to take advantage of working with co-workers more knowledgeable than yourself and ask questions. Having an inquisitive mind will show your interest and motivation to perform well as an active team member. Also, it doesn’t hurt to strengthen your areas of weakness by reading up on what you don’t know or on what you could improve.

Be the first to provide help

Recognize opportunity to help even if the task is not ideal. Your co-workers will appreciate the helping hand and initiative. This shows that you are capable of leading and are dedicated to the success of the company.

Offer Insight

Just because you are the newbie, that doesn’t mean you can’t contribute new ideas. Today’s generation of young professionals has grown up with certain technology and social media as part of its culture. Become a thought leader by utilizing your unique perspective and skills to offer solutions that will prove your value and contribution to the group.
