Made in the USA: Some Apparel Manufacturing Reshoring
According to a recent article in USA Today, a small but growing number of clothing designers and retailers are bringing production back to the U.S. Rising labor costs, poor quality and long lead times are the major reasons for moving production back.
In the past few years, major designers and retailers such as Brooks Brothers, Karen Kane and Saks, as well as dozens of smaller companies, have moved some production from foreign countries to the U.S., creating perhaps 1,000 jobs. This may be a drop in the bucket, but it is seem by some as a growing trend.
Margaret Bishop, an adjunct professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology, says most clothing brands and retailers are considering reshoring. She estimates that as many as 200,000 apparel-making jobs could return to the U.S. over the next decade.
“We feel this is going to be the wave of the future — manufacturing in the United States,” says John Martynec, head of domestic manufacturing for Brooks Brothers.
