Next day delivery is so yesterday

Consumers are demanding faster and faster delivery for online orders, and firms like Amazon and eBay are conditioning them to think that it’s possible and affordable. While many say that consumers don’t really want same-day delivery, I’m reminded of a famous quote.

“A lot of times, people don’t know what they want until you show it to them,” Steve Jobs.

The appeal of same-day delivery is simple: Give customers a great experience and they will come back. If same-day delivery is convenient and affordable, it will become the new norm. And retailers better get on board. In this age of instant gratification, consumers will soon come to expect same-day delivery.

The good news for brick-and-mortar retailers with a national chain of stores is that these stores have inventory within miles of the majority of consumers. This actually puts them at an advantage over online-only players which typically have regional distribution centers.
