10 Things to Know About John Mackey

John Mackey, Co-Founder and CEO of Whole Foods, will be speaking at ProMat 2015 in a keynote titled “Conscious Capitalism: Blueprint for a New System for Doing Business” on Tuesday, March 24, 2015.

Mackey will use real-world examples from well-known companies to illustrate how these organizations use four specific tenets: higher purpose, stakeholder integration, conscious leadership, and conscious culture and management to build strong businesses that realize their highest potential.

John Mackey…

1. Was named  Ernst & Young’s “United States Entrepreneur of the Year” in 2003

2. Was named to Barron’s “World’s Best CEOs” list in 2006

3. Is widely credited with helping fuel the rise of organic and natural food in the United States

4. Is one of the founders of “Conscious Capitalism,” and co-author of “Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business.”

5. Co-founded a health food store, SaferWay, while living in a vegetarian housing co-op

6. Merged SaferWay with Clarksville Natural Grocery to form Whole Foods Market

7. Reduced his salary to $1 a year and donated his stock portfolio to charity

8. Received an honorary bachelor’s degree from Bentley College

9. Studied philosophy and religion at the University of Texas at Austin and Trinity University

10. Dropped out of college to pursue his business.
