Freight Transportation and Logistics by the Numbers

The 2019 holiday season saw a record number of people anxiously waiting for their last packages to arrive before Christmas. Very few have an appreciation for just how amazing today’s fulfillment and delivery systems operate.

According to MHI’s Freight by the Numbers infographic, 49.3 million tons of freight moves through the U.S. transportation system each day and customers are expecting shorter delivery time on their packages. In a comparison of last-mile carrier share of Amazon.com packages, the average number of delivery days decreased from 5.5 days in 2016- 2017 to 3.9 days in 2018-2019. The ability of today’s supply chain and logistics industry continues to amaze us and raise the bar for what’s possible.
