“Jobs of Tomorrow”: Combating the Labor Shortage

With the rise of ChatGPT, the fear that robots will replace human workers is headline news. However, if you work in a warehouse or distribution center, you probably have a more realistic view of how robots will be used to supplement the workforce. Episode 10 of our “Jobs of Tomorrow” docuseries, Combating the Labor Shortage, addresses the current and future role of robots in the supply chain industry.

One of the main points of this episode is that most companies don’t have the option to use only human employees—there simply aren’t enough humans looking for work. Even before the pandemic, a labor shortage was a serious problem in the manufacturing world due to such factors as the baby boomers retiring.  Of course, once the pandemic hit and Americans began to shop more online, the need for warehouse workers exploded.

To address this labor shortage, many companies have turned to solutions from providers like Locus Robotics. They have found that when they apply robots to such tasks as picking, the jobs become safer for the humans that the robots work alongside. The technology can reduce the need for workers to do heavy lifting, creating less wear and tear on their bodies.
