Mexicali Expo Aims to Give U.S. Suppliers Chance to Tap into Nearshore Market

A wide range of suppliers will have a chance later this month to meet face-to-face with major international manufacturers to explore possible business opportunities in Mexicali, Mexico.

Suppliers’ one-on-one talks with manufacturers that have operations in Mexicali are being scheduled for the fourth annual Mexicali Supply Expo, which is hosted by a coalition of Mexican public and private sector organizations. The expo is being held on Feb. 27 at Palaco Industrial Park in Mexicali, across the border from El Centro, Calif.

Manufacturers planning to attend include Gulfstream, Honeywell, Newell Rubbermaid, Triumph, Breg, Johnson Outdoors, Kenworth and Skyworkds, according to the Mexicali Supply Association.

The companies are seeking suppliers for machining, tooling and other components, injection molding, printed circuit board assembly, automation systems, industrial supplies and packaging materials, among other operations.

“It’s important for us to create a smooth path between successful corporations that are already manufacturing in our region, and American suppliers who are considering tapping into the tremendous potential this market has to offer,” Alfredo Garcia, president of the Supply Expo committee, said in a press release. “This event helps manufacturers expand their supply chain and gives suppliers the network and resources they want.”

Mexicali, a center of nearshore manufacturing, hosts operations from over 500 national and international companies and is home to a labor pool of more than 360,000, the association says. More than $350 million in components business is generated annually in Mexicali, the group says.

“With more companies now seeking to remain competitive in today’s global market, and others leaving traditional offshore locations in China and India, Mexicali is seeing a new surge in manufacturing growth,” the group says.
