MHI Board of Governor Dave Lippert Publishes New Book on Reshoring Trend

MHI Board of Governor Dave Lippert recently published a new book on reshoring titled Bringing Jobs Back to the USA: Rebuilding America’s Manufacturing Through Reshoring. The book, co-written with Tim Hutzel, exposes the true cost of offshoring to help American businesses make the right offshoring decisions.

“We believe that too many US companies have moved manufacturing offshore in the search for cheap labor or simply to match competitors in strategy. For some, not looking initially at the entire picture resulted in an ill-advised move. For others, the decision that once made economic sense may no longer do so. It is time to take a fresh look,” Lippert said.

“In a world of shrinking supply chains, high energy costs, mass customization, and rapidly rising Chinese labor costs, it may be compelling to have manufacturing located close to the market for its products.”

The book looks at a number of companies who manufacture offshore, and some of the intended and unintended costs of doing so. It also reviews five companies who manufactured offshore at one point, and determined that there were compelling reasons to return their operations to the US and includes outlines a roadmap for reshoring using a step-by-step methodology to help business leaders make the right decisions regarding reshoring their products back to America.

“It is only a myth that says manufacturing makes more sense overseas where labor costs are lower,” Hutzel added. “Not only is the labor cost differential evaporating, but other hidden costs have been taking a toll. This book helps manufacturers discover how these hidden costs can make a difference in their offshoring decision.”
