MODEX Trend Spotter – IoT for Supply Chains

By Alex Batty, MHI Marketing Communications Coordinator |@mhi_alex

Internet of Things (IoT) is a pretty big buzzword right now. For those of you who don’t know what IoT is, basically it’s when everything you have talks to each other. The proper definition is:

“the interconnection via the Internet of computing devices embedded in everyday objects, enabling them to send and receive data.”

but yeah. Everything talking to each other.

In supply chain this means connected warehouses, connected shipping, and is dependent sensing technologies, cloud computing, good information architecture, and the Internet.

Also home of cat videos. But I digress.

What you get from Industrial IoT is information: big data that can lead to predictive analytics and transparency. And that’s what the customer wants.

So it’s pretty understandable that it’s kind of a hot topic. As with any new thing, there are pros and cons, risks and rewards, and so the educational part of MODEX 2018 is here to help you figure those out for you.

If you head on over to our page about education seminars (which there are over 100 of, by the way), you can find them on all sorts of topics, including IoT. If you slip “IoT” into that handy dandy search box, you get all sorts of results. And that’s just with the one keyword.

So IoT is really cool. Learn about it. Know the risks and rewards and figure out how it works for you. Because it’s not going away (at least until the Cylons invade) and has the potential to help your company meet and exceed customer demands.

(For those of you who aren’t super nerds, I’m referencing Battlestar Galactica, and in the reboot, they make the point that no networked computers are to be used on this particular ship because of plot and so that the robot bad guys [Cylons] can’t take them over. This has been your nerdy pop culture tidbit for the day.)

MODEX 2018 will be held April 9-12 in Atlanta’s Georgia World Congress Center. Over 850 exhibitors will showcase their solutions on MODEX’s two show floors totaling over 280,000 square feet of manufacturing and supply chain solutions. MODEX exhibits will represent all segments of the material handling and supply chain logistics industry, from traditional, manual equipment to computerized, automated systems. MODEX 2018 will also feature a comprehensive educational conference including keynotes and show floor educational seminars led by industry experts and leading authorities.
