Workforce Spotlight: Western Guilford High School

Workforce development and training continues to be a top concern for MHI members.  To help promote connections between MHI member companies and academic institutions, we are going spotlight various programs.  Today, we are highlighting Western Guilford High School in Greensboro, NC led by Art Close.

How long has your program been running?

Our program has been running for eight years. When I arrived, the program ran for about two years and only had 14 students enrolled. To increase our program enrollment, our Principal, in partnership with our CTE Director, added our CTE course in the curriculum as an elective. This increased our enrollment to 60 students in year three and 220 by year four. With this large increase in students, we added Fundamentals of Warehousing & Distribution textbooks to our curriculum to provide our students with additional knowledge on the supply chain industry.

How has Student Day impacted your students?

Our students’ interactions with exhibitors at MODEX and ProMat encourages them to be major in the supply chain field when they to college. It also increases my CTE program enrollment because our students share the show’s excitement with their peers and which motivates them to enroll in the course.

How could the MHI Members help you? Or What information or resources do you need?

We want to keep to connection with MHI going. We appreciate your support in funding our trips to ProMat and MODEX. Our partnership with MHI has allowed us to provide invaluable experience to our students and teachers. My only request would be to keep us informed of any resources that could benefit our school as we continue to develop our program.

We have also benefited from equipment donations from your members. If we you could continue to provide equipment if and when it becomes available that really impacts the students learning experience as well.
